The SAT is a college entrance exam that tests a student's knowledge in reading, writing and math. It was originally known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test and today it is commonly referred to as the SAT or the SAT Reasoning Test. The non-profit organization College Board[1] publishes this test. Students may choose to prepare for the SAT, the ACT or both tests, having scores sent to prospective colleges.
Typical costs:
Self-Guided SAT study tools like books and software typically cost $10-$50. For example, Random House[2] publishes several SAT books in the $10-$30 range; the College Board publishes the Official SAT Study Guide[3] for $22, which includes 10 official practice tests, practice essay questions and free online score reports. Instructor-led SAT prep classes typically cost $75-$1,000. For example, Princeton Review[6] offers SAT Classroom, an 18-hour course focusing on frequent test components and the essentials for $600, at locations across the U.S. A more in-depth, 30-hour review course is offered for $1,000. Sherwood Test Prep[7] offers an 18-hour SAT prep course for $400, with 60 locations[8] across the U.S. Courses are taught by university-level instructors, and students take 6 practice SATs throughout the course and learn test-taking techniques and strategies.
Private tutoring for the SAT typically costs $75-$250 per hour, and can take place either in-person or online. For example, Parliament Tutors[9] offers a 4-hour package of private, in-home tutoring for $360 ($120 per hour) and a 60-hour tutoring package for $4,500 ($75 per hour). SAT prep should include multiple-choice practice questions and will likely include test-taking strategies and an overview of the structure of the SAT. Math review topics should include algebra, geometry and probability, while Reading Comprehension topics should test the student's response to critical reading of sample passages. Practice for the Writing portion of the SAT may be included in the SAT prep course or study materials.
Most test prep books and courses will include access to full-length SAT practice tests.

It costs $49 to register for the SAT.
A scientific or graphing calculator[11] is required to take the SAT, as well as to complete test prep courses. A graphing calculator can cost $20 for a used, older model to $150 for a new, upgraded model. Used used TI-82[12] calculators typically sell for $30 or less on eBay, while a new TI-84 Plus calculator[13] from Texas Instruments costs about $123 including shipping.
