The Advanced Placement exams are tests that conclude many high school AP courses. Many colleges and universities accept completion of AP programs and a passed exam as credit toward a college degree. There are 33 Advanced Placement exams, administered by The College Board.
Typical costs:
The test[1] costs $87. Students outside the United States may pay higher rates.
Official study guides[2] from the College Board cost between $10 and $40.
Some companies, such as The Princeton Review[3] , offer tutoring for about $10 per hour. Online guidance through third-party tutors is available through companies like EduWizards[4] , which offers up to three half-hour trial sessions for free.
The $87 test fee includes the basic test, a score report to be sent to the high school and distribution of scores to colleges or universities.
Most high schools do not charge extra for the yearlong AP classes that precede the examination.
Additional costs:
Other test fees[5] include scores by phone for about $8, rush score reports ($25) and score withholding ($10 per college).
Some high schools charge students textbook fees for AP classes. Textbooks can cost more than $100.
Study books and other helpful materials are available through bookstores and online retailers. Such supplies cost around $10-$25.
Changing the date of the test costs $24; it's another $24 to change the testing place.
Discounts:
Fee reductions[6] of about $30 are available for some AP students who qualify based on financial need. This reduces the cost of the test to $57.
Students can save hundreds of dollars[7] in tuition, student fees and textbook charges by passing the AP exam and getting college credit while still in high school. Exact savings vary widely based on what college a student plans to attend.

Online classes and tutoring are also offered by The Princeton Review[8] and some test-preparation companies. A recent Laredo Sun article[9] has tips for how to choose a tutor.
