A web-based practice test[3] costs $37 and is administered by testing and assessment company Prometric. A print format test[4] costs $27 plus applicable taxes.
The $320 price includes the exam and scores sent to dental schools listed during registration. With an overall score of 1-30, the four-part test includes reading comprehension, survey of natural sciences, perceptual ability and quantitative reasoning.
Sending scores to additional schools[6] after the initial application costs $25 each.
Depending on study styles, test preparation options[7] can include combinations of textbooks, online courses or in-class and tutoring options ranging from about $55 for a simple online practice test to more than $1,200 for a comprehensive package.
Discounts:
The ADA offers a scholarship[8] of up to 50% for students facing severe financial hardship.
Shopping for the dental admission test:
Check with the prospective dental school or campus bookstore for recommendations on how to prepare for the DAT. Brigham Young University, for example, offers tips. In addition, the American Student Dental Association recommends[9] narrowing test preparation to areas of difficulty first.
Classroom-based courses are also available through independent companies including The Princeton Review[10] and Kaplan[11] for about $1,400.
A DAT electronic application[12] is available through the American Dental Association. To register, applicants must first provide evidence of intent to apply to dental school along with meeting the other eligibility requirements of at least one year of college courses including biology, and general and organic chemistry. Once approved the application is forwarded to Prometric [13] to set the test date and location.
Applicants must register[14] for a Dentpin[15] . This PIN number is needed for all dental students and DAT test takers within the US Dental Education System and standardized testing programs.
A list of test centers[16] is available through Prometric by entering the desired area.
The American Student Dental Association[17] maintains a list of dental schools. Changes to the DAT procedure will affect all areas of the website in early 2012. Check the ADA website for updated information.
