Rehabilitation counselors help patients overcome the effects of physical and emotional disabilities resulting from birth defects, illness or disease, accidents, or other causes. The Bureau of Labor Statistics[1] says rehabilitation counselors should hold a master's degree, although states have varying qualifications for licensing counselors.
Typical costs:
A master's degree in rehabilitation counseling typically costs $12,000-$51,000 for a two-year program. Tuition for the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center[2] 's two-year master's program costs $12,100 for residents or $31,000 for non-residents. The master's in rehabilitation counseling at Auburn University[3] in Auburn, AL, costs $26,650 for a 54-hour program for tuition.
Certification for rehabilitation counselors costs $385 and must be renewed every five years. The Certified Rehabilitation Counselor exam[4] is accepted by most states as the certification necessary to seek licensure.
State licensing fees cost about $70-$100. In Utah[5] , applicants may pay $70 to apply to become a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor in the state. Virginia residents may apply to become a Certified Rehabilitation Provider for $90 and New Jersey[6] 's Rehabilitation Counselor licensing fee is $75. Requirements vary by state, and links to each state's licensing board are listed at the American Counseling Association.
Programs should be accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education[7] and must include a supervised internship of 600 hours to meet CRC certification requirements[8] .
Additional costs:
Housing, food, and other fees can add $10,000-$20,000 per year to a graduate student's tuition cost. Maryville University[9] in Saint Louis estimates $7,500-$9,500 per year for housing and food and $600 per year in technology fees. Illinois Institute of Technology[10] in Chicago estimates living expenses, books and supplies at $13,244 per year.
Discounts:
Graduate schools often supplement educational fees for students by offering scholarship or assistantships to qualified applicants. For instance, the University of Tennessee Knoxville[11] offers a variety of fellowship scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $30,000 per year, and the University of Kentucky[12] awards a limited number of assistantships which cover a student's full tuition.
Shopping for becoming a rehabilitation counselor:
The Council on Rehabilitation Education lists accredited rehabilitation counseling schools and programs[13] by state as well as some answers to frequently asked questions[14] on the profession.
