The Medical College Admissions Test, or MCAT, is administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges[1] .
Typical costs:
The MCAT regular registration fee is $240. Regular registration closes 14 days before the test date; however, early registration as much as 60 days in advance is required by some testing locations.
International testing sites outside the U.S., Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands cost an additional $80, for a total of $320.
A late registration fee costs an additional $70. Late registration closes 7 days before the test date.
The MCAT became a computerized exam in 2007. The test is offered[2] 22 times per year on weekdays and Saturdays at locations across the U.S. and on a limited basis at international testing centers[3] .
The testing portion of the MCAT lasts a total of 4 hours and 25 minutes, but includes an additional hour of breaks between sections, an optional survey and a required examinee agreement for a total "seat" time of 5 hours and 25 minutes.
The test consists of four topics: physical sciences (52 questions), verbal reasoning (40 questions), writing sample (2 prompts) and biological sciences (52 questions). Each section of the MCAT includes some experimental questions that do not count toward the final score. The MCAT Essentials[4] document contains a detailed analysis of each section and registration details for all test takers.
The MCAT test may be voided at no cost, at the participant's request. This means that an individual attended the testing session, but does not wish to have his or her scores recorded. If a participant chooses to void the test, no score will be reported; however, it will count as one of the individual's three allowable attempts of the MCAT in that year.
Additional costs:
MCAT study tools like test prep books can cost $20-$120. Online and in-person MCAT study courses typically range from $160 to $2,000 and private tutoring can add an additional $75-$250 per hour.
If an applicant believes a scoring error occurred, he or she may provide a written request for a rescore of the exam for $55 per section or $110 for the entire exam. If the test-taker believes a particular question is erroneous, they may write the AAMC to challenge the test question within five days of the test date.
Discounts:
The Association of American Medical Colleges offers a Fee Assistance Program[5] for applicants whose total family income is 300 percent or less of the poverty level. This program offers a reduced MCAT testing fee of $85 (regular $235), and is fully refundable if the registrant decides to cancel.
Shopping for the mcat:
Students should plan to take the MCAT during the same year they plan to apply for medical school, according to the Georgia Tech Office of Pre-Health Advising. For instance, an applicant planning to attend medical school in 2013 should take the MCAT and apply for medical school in 2012.
