NCLEX Exam Cost

How Much Does the NCLEX Exam Cost?

average costTypical Fee: $200high costInternational Site: $350

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing administers the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) and the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Nursing program graduates seeking a license from their state board of nursing must pass the appropriate exam to become either a licensed practical nurse (referred to in some states as a licensed vocational nurse) or a registered nurse.

Typical costs:

  • The registration fee for taking either NCLEX exam (-PN or -RN), is $200.
  • To schedule an exam at an international site, the fee is $350.
What should be included:
  • Exam candidates need to ask their state board of nursing to declare them eligible to take the NCLEX; the board will issue them an authorization to test[1] . An ATT can be valid for 60 to 365 days, depending on the state, but is typically good for 90 days. The candidate must take the NCLEX exam while the ATT is valid.
  • On the exam day, candidates need to bring acceptable ID and a copy of their ATT letter. Candidates will have up to five hours to take the -PN exam and up to six hours for the -RN exam, including a short tutorial and two optional breaks. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing explains what to expect[2] on exam day and after taking the NCLEX.
  • Candidates who fail the NCLEX must wait 45-90 days before taking the exam again, depending on the requirements set by the state board of nursing.
Additional costs:
  • When applying to the state board of nursing for an authorization to test, candidates typically pay state license fees of $75-$200 or more.
  • Books and other materials to help prepare for the NCLEX typically cost $25-$100 or more; online prep programs are typically $50-$350; and in-person classes can be $100-$500 or more, depending on what is included.
  • The exam results will be sent to the state board of nursing candidate listed on the application; changing the designated state board of nursing after registration costs $50.
  • Changing the type of exam (-PN or -RN) after registration costs $50.
Shopping for the nclex exam:
  • The NCLEX is part of the state licensing process, and license requirements vary; for application forms and details about specific procedures, candidates must contact the the state board of nursing[3] in the state where they wish to work.
  • The National Council of State Boards of Nursing answers frequently asked candidates' questions[4] about the NCLEX exam, including eligibility and registration requirements.
