Modeling Classes Cost

How Much Do Modeling Classes Cost?

average costClasses or Workshops: $15-$1,250high costConference: $2,000-$10,000

Modeling classes purport to prepare novice models for professional work in magazines, on runways and other fashion modeling work.

Typical costs:

  • Modeling classes cost from $15 for a one-hour class to $1,250 for a weeklong intensive workshop, which can include a wider spectrum of modeling topics. Class prices vary depending on the school's size, reputation and location.
  • For example, Touches of Beauty[1] , based in Surprise, AZ, charges $15 for a one-hour class, and a one-hour workshop at the Elite Fashion Academy Los Angeles[2] costs $125. The Teen Self Improvement & Modeling Workshop[3] , which is made up of seven, two-hour sessions at the Modeling & Acting Training Center of Hawaii, costs $475.
  • Attendance at one of the twice-yearly conferences/competitions by the International Modeling and Talent Association (a major professional organization of modeling schools and talent agencies which claims actors Katie Holmes and Ashton Kutcher as alumni) costs another $2,000-$10,000, depending on the modeling school and whether the classes are part of the conference package.

What should be included:
  • Basic modeling skills taught in such classes include runway walking and photo posing.
  • Some modeling classes may also cover interpersonal skills such as etiquette, professionalism, interviewing skills and audition preparation.
  • Workshop topics typically span the breadth of the modeling world and include the above as well as breathing, posture and body language; skin care product analysis and application; make-up techniques; hair care; nutrition and fitness.
  • Classes are typically taught by former models or others who have worked in the fashion industry.
  • The next step in furthering a modeling career would be to join a modeling agency. Agencies act as liaisons between working models and the advertising agencies or fashion designers that employ them. Be sure to ask officials with potential modeling schools whether they are affiliated with an agency.
Additional costs:
  • Since appearance is the main thrust of the profession, models are advised to invest in quality health, beauty and skin care products, and to stay fit, which may include a gym membership ($20-$50 or more per month) or personal trainer ($60-$70 or more per session).
  • Some models are advised to take acting classes to learn poise, camera work and confidence. Acting classes typically cost $150-$2,000.
  • Freelance models who do not sign with an agency need a professional portfolio, which typically costs $200-$1,500.
Shopping for modeling classes:
  • If attending an IMTA conference is the goal, be sure to join a modeling school that is an IMTA member. Though this is where some models get their start, be aware that the IMTA has received criticism[4] for promising more to attendees than is given.
  • While modeling school teaches skills necessary to be a model, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that attending modeling schools does not necessarily lead to job opportunities. Many models are discovered by agency scouts or after an applicant simply emails a photo to an agency, the BLS notes[5] .
  • The Federal Trade Commission advises[6] to ask the school whether it is licensed or bonded, if that is a state requirement, and to be wary of schools that have special referral relationships with specific agencies.
